San Antonio non-profits united in helping the homeless amid scorching heat

Hundreds of people have visited Corazon San Antonio and Christian Assistance Ministry since Sunday to escape the extreme heat.

SAN ANTONIO — As scorching temperatures continue to pummel San Antonio, a coalition of non-profits is working on helping the homeless population.

On Tuesday morning, more than 250 people visited Christian Assistance Ministry (CAM) where they received a variety of resources.

“The heat is incredibly miserable,” said Dawn White-Fosdick, president and CEO of Christian Assistance Ministry. “We have water hoses hooked up so that clients can access cool water and cool their body off. We offer showers. We have a cooler we set out that we put ice in every day.”

The extreme heat with temperatures in the triple digits is expected to last throughout the week. White-Fosdick stressed the significance of the City of San Antonio and non-profits working together.

“We work really hard to plan and coordinate amongst each other to be the most efficient and do the most for people,” White-Fosdick said.

Corazon San Antonio is among the other organizations assisting the homeless community amid the dangerously hot conditions.

On Sunday, Corazon San Antonio started expanding their Day Center hours from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Grace Lutheran Church has served as a safe haven for hundreds of people in need of relief from the heat.

“We actually had over 200 people hit our facility yesterday and today. And we anticipate that number will remain the same throughout the week,” said Erika Borrego, president and CEO of Corazon San Antonio. “People are uncomfortable outside. We have air conditioning, we have water, we have food. Then we’re sending them away with a sack lunch and water as well for the night.”

Haven for Hope has partnered with Endeavors to provide off-campus sleeping capacity for individual men.

Haven has reached maximum sleeping capacity for certain individual men enrolled in the low-barrier South Campus shelter. The enrollment does not include young adults ages 18-25, older adults 65 and or disabled people.
