SAN ANTONIO — The San Antonio Public Library reflected on the most popular titles from 2023.
The library broke down their most read titles in three separate categories including adult, teen, and children’s.
The top three books in the adult category gained national and global recognition.
The lucky book that reigned supreme was “Fourth Wing” by Rebecca Yarros, which has sold more than 2 million copies globally, according to the publisher and the New York Times.
Coming in second was “It Ends With Us,” by Colleen Hoover. More than three million copies have been sold and multiple sources announced that a movie is in the works starring Blake Lively and Justin Baldoni.
Taking home the bronze was “I’m Glad My Mom Died” by Jennette McCurdy. This hilarious and heartbreaking memoir written by the “iCarly” star gained lots of buzz and attention, especially given the shocking title. In the book McCurdy opens up about her struggle as a former child actor and her tumultuous relationship with her mother and how McCurdy retook control of her life years later.
The next category was the teen section which contains two books from the same series. The top spot was filled by “A Court of Thorns and Roses” by Sarah J. Maas. The series is commonly referred to as ACOTAR by Maas’s impressive fan base. The series exploded in 2022-2023 with books being purchased from stores at almost break-neck speed.
“A Court of Thorns and Roses” follows Feyre who is dragged into a magical land by Tamlin, a High Lord of the faeries. As Feyre’s feelings toward Tamlin slowly turn from hostility to passion, the threats against the faerie lands grow. Feyre then realizes she must fight back against an ancient curse or she will lose Tamlin forever.
Second place in the teen category was granted to book two of the ACOTAR series “A Court of Mist and Fury.” In book two Feyre’s story continues and she must now deal with a complicated relationship she has forged with the mesmerizing High Lord of the feared Night Court, Rhysand.
Third on the teen podium was awarded to “A Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes” by Suzanne Collins. This book is technically a prequel to the Hunger Games trilogy that fans have come to know and love. Audiences are given a backstory that shapes the way they think about the tyrannical President Snow and gives insight on how he became that way. The story highlights a teenage Coriolanus Snow, his upbringing, and his role in the tenth Hunger Games. The movie based off the book, hit theatres in November of 2023 and garnered over 300 million dollars at the box office, according to IMDb.
And lastly, proving that time doesn’t matter in the reading world, the top three children’s titles were all Harry Potter books written by J.K Rowling. Coincidentally the number one book in the children’s category list was Harry Potter and the Sorcerer Stone, the book that snatched silver was “Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets,” and third place was bestowed to “Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban.”
The library posted on Facebook thanking residents for making 2023 truly amazing and hopes this year will bring more adventures and stories.
