San Antonio Zoo to host first Pokémon Community Day of 2024

Guests will get the chance to play Pokémon Go in a safe environment all while visiting with the amazing animals at the zoo.

SAN ANTONIO — San Antonio Zoo is inviting the public to their first Pokémon Community Day of 2024 on Saturday.

The zoo will be hosting the event from 9 a.m. through 5 p.m.

Guests will get the chance to play Pokémon Go in a safe environment all while visiting with the amazing animals at the zoo.

“It’s really cool to see all the families that come out to the zoo to experience community days. You see the little ones with mom and dad, grandma and grandpa, big families walking around the zoo experiencing everything we have for that day all while playing the game," Mason Rodriguez, Director of Marketing at San Antonio Zoo said.

There are 18 pokéstops within the zoo and lures will be dropped from 2 p.m. until 5 p.m. The zoo said they see a lot of families and guests walking around the lion habitat – which is known to have a high concentration of pokéstops.

This community day will feature Porygon, a small but mighty pokémon whose abilities include tracing which means that when the pokémon enters a battle the Porygon can copy their opponents’ abilities.

“I think it’s really important to have events like Pokémon Community Days at the zoo because it provides a safe and fun space for families to come out, get outdoors, plus as a non-profit every ticket purchase and every member that comes through our gates helps us in our vision for securing a future for wildlife," Rodriguez said.

The zoo will also be handing out exclusive zoo collectible cards near Outpost Amazonia. The cards will be available to the first 200 players that can show proof of catching 10 porygon.

“We created our own custom pokémon cards with our own zoo animals on there. So it’s really cool to see guests come every month last year and collect all the cards and we’re really excited to roll out the cards for this year," Rodriguez said.

The zoo says lucky players may even find a rainbow version of the collectible cards.

This event is included with standard admission and is free for members.
