SAPD: Officer pinned between vehicles while directing traffic following BCSO pursuit

Chief McManus says there would not have been a pursuit if his officers were involved.

SAN ANTONIO — An 11-year veteran of the San Antonio Police Department was injured and is in surgery Thursday evening after a vehicle hit and pinned him while he was helping conduct traffic on the city's northeast side.

While SAPD Chief William McManus said he wasn't entirely sure of the circumstances of the incident, he did confirm the officer was directing traffic following a pursuit involving Bexar County deputies that ended in a collision nearby. BCSO officials said that pursuit was sparked after deputies noticed a truck making multiple hazardous traffic violations and wouldn't stop.

McManus, meanwhile, pointed out Thursday evening that his department prohibits engaging in pursuits for anything but a violent crime or a crime involving a firearm.

He said there would not have been a pursuit if SAPD officers were involved. Meanwhile, he added he hoped the officer injured would not experience long-term damage from the injury.
