Five things to do in San Antonio during Spring Break without breaking the bank

These activities are either affordable or FREE!

SAN ANTONIO — Spring Break comes every year but sometimes it’s hard to find something fun to do with the kiddos.

KENS 5 found five affordable places to visit.

Comanche Lookout Park

On the northeast side, adjacent to the Semmes Branch Library is Comanche Lookout Park. The area is rich with history and beautiful Native American landmarks and travel routes.

This 96-acre public park is owned by the City of San Antonio and is commonly used by joggers, runners and residents who walk the routes daily while also enjoying nature’s beauty.

Along the trek you can spot a large four-story column stone that overlooks the forest and Najo Jam (Our Home), a public artwork display within the park. The artwork is pan-Indian and relates to multiple indigenous tribes that lived and claimed the area.

Yanaguana Garden at Hemisfair Park

If you are in the downtown area, we have the perfect spot you can enjoy for FREE.

Yanaguana Garden opened in 2015 as a beautifully landscaped outdoor wonderland for children and adults.

If you stop by, you’ll notice several play areas including a sand pit and splash pad.

Adults can also enjoy a nice game of cornhole or ping pong. And as the sun sets the garden comes to life with bright vibrant lights and colors and residents can stop at one of the outdoor restaurants nearby.

Briscoe Western Museum

You can also enjoy the Briscoe Western Art Museum without ever having to leave the Riverwalk. The Briscoe will have multiple activities for their Spring Break Roundup which will take place from March 11 through the 14. The activities include arts and crafts, building with Legos, painting sessions, and story time stampedes. The programs celebrates the heritage and culture of the American West.

Different activities will be available on different days. For a list of their complete schedule click here.

Spring Break Roundup is included with museum admission with no charge for supplies and no reservations required.

Phil Hardberger Park and Robert L. B. Tobin Land Bridge

Phil Hardberger Park on the north side of the city offers amazing amenities like a dog park, picnic area, playground, and various treks into the great outdoors.

Residents can easily pack a lunch, head to the park, and have fun in the sun.

The park is also connected to the Robert L.B. Tobin Land Bridge.

The bridge connects both sides of Hardberger park which was initially divided by Wurzbach Parkway.

The bridge was created to give wildlife a safe space and ensure a secure crossing for animals and humans.

Most people don’t realize they are crossing the bridge since they are shielded from the busy roads below and are enjoying the majestic nature and wildlife.

Mays Family YMCA At Potranco

You could also join the Y.

The Mays Family YMCA At Potranco is open Monday through Sunday with activities for everyone.

There’s also multiple amenities like a gymnasium, indoor pool, basketball court, workout studios, cycling area and so much more.

As a unique addition the YMCA partnered with the San Antonio Public Library so members and visitors could enjoy a library within the Y. Children and adults can explore the Potranco Branch library full of book collections and computer areas, perfect for online gaming or research.

There’s also a Spring Break Camp available for kids between the ages of 6 and 13. The camp is from March 11 through the 14. This is not included with membership.
