SAN ANTONIO — The San Antonio River Authority celebrated National Public Lands Day last Saturday by giving back to nature.

The River Authority along with outside partners hosted multiple events to clean up the river and beautify the city.

First, the River Authority teamed up with JPMorganChase for a native planting event at Confluence Park. Multiple volunteers planted 200 native grasses and sunflowers in an effort to expand the North American Friendship Garden. The garden along with the nearby Mission Reach ecosystem restoration provides a haven for Monarch butterflies and birds.

Toyota North America also partnered with the River Authority and put together a litter clean-up near the Mission Reach. Volunteers worked together to remove more than 1,000 pounds of waste from the river. Volunteers said the litter haul included 32 bags of trash, 2 tires, a mattress and a sofa cushion.

According to organizers, National Public Lands Day is the largest single-day volunteer event for public lands in the country.
