'He's really, really talented': 19-year-old shot at New Braunfels Applebee's graduated early to pursue music career

Chance Herron was sitting in a car when he was shot in the chest and neck. He died two weeks later at the hospital.

SAN ANTONIO — We're learning more about the victim of a deadly shooting at a New Braunfels Applebee's.

His family says his dream was to become a rapper.

As of Friday afternoon, the three suspects identified in connection to this case are in custody. 20-year-old Richard Rosas turned himself in Friday. He's facing murder charges. Last week, 20-year-old Justin Sherard and 20-year-old Jacob Rowser were also arrested on aggravated assault charges — which could be upgraded.

"He would just light up any room he ever walked into, not only with his eyes but with his smile," said Kyla Stubbs, referring to her son, 19-year-old Chance Herron.

The best way Stubbs could describe her son is he was unapologetically himself — all the time.

"Always looking for the bright side in life, always up for a new adventure," Stubbs explained. "Dancing up a storm just to entertain the room...It's almost as if his motive was to make everyone around him smile constantly."

Herron graduated more than a year early from high school. With his goal being a career in music, he converted his bedroom into a recording studio. Stubbs says her son began to do it all: music production as well as videography.

"He was a rapper. He was really good, too. As his mom, I didn't always love to hear some of the lyrics in his songs," Stubbs said. "Without bias he's also really, really talented."

October 1, shortly after midnight, New Braunfels Police found Herron shot in the neck and chest while sitting in a car in the Applebee's parking lot. A 20-year-old woman in the car with him, who was also shot, has since been released from the hospital.

Herron, who was paralyzed from the neck down, died in the hospital 12 days later.

"I've had so many people write me saying, 'I don't even know your brother, but I've been at the same party next to him and he brightened up the room without me even knowing him,'" said Herron's sister, Nyari. "We were always playing videos, making videos with him and his friends and our sister. He was just our world."

Family says Herron always had many ideas about life and how to make each day beautiful. Herron was about to welcome new life into his world, with a child on the way.

"Despite some of the popularity that he had locally and just who he was, he still was very kind. He would have never hurt anyone. He's a protector for his family. He would have done anything in the world for either of his sisters or anyone in his family," said Stubbs. "He had a heart of gold and just wanted everyone around him to be ok."
