SAN ANTONIO — Nearly 200 community members, leaders, and child advocates came together Sunday afternoon at Woodlawn Lake Park to celebrate the life of Hosanna Honey Blue Sancho.
Hosanna's family say on Wednesday she was stabbed to death at the hands of her mother, 36-year-old Nephiteri Sancho, who they say struggled with mental health issues. On Thursday Sancho was arrested on a capital murder charge.
Sunday's vigil was hosted by the non-profit Eagle's Fight, who will be one of the organizations assisting with Hosanna's burial.
"As a community, we can do better in protecting our children, and we should do better in protecting our children." Pamela Allen, CEO and founder of Eagle's Flight.
At Sunday's vigil Hosanna's family set aside mounting questions, the biggest one, why? It's a tragedy, impossible to comprehend.
"I miss her life and it doesn't feel real. I keep telling everybody, I want to wake up from this horrible dream," said Angel Gonzales, Hosanna's cousin.
After the vigil Hosanna's family can take some comfort knowing the community stands with them during this tragedy.
"It means a lot and means the world to us, because Hosanna was everything to us," said Gonzales.
Hosanna's family says she will always live on in their hearts and memories.
