16-year-old dead after shooting in south Phoenix

Police said one person was pronounced dead at the scene and the other person died at the hospital.

PHOENIX — One teenager and one adult have died in a shooting in south Phoenix, according to authorities.

The Phoenix Police Department said the shooting happened around 7:30 p.m. Sunday near 7th Street and Southern Avenue in Phoenix.

Police said one person was pronounced dead at the scene. The second person was taken to the hospital where they were pronounced dead.

The juvenile victim has been identified as 16-year-old Mario Banegas and the adult victim has been identified as 24-year-old Jovanni Burciaga.

A third victim showed up at the hospital with a gunshot wound and their injuries appear to be non-life-threatening.

Police said it appears Banegas and Burciaga drove to a residence in south Phoenix where gunfire was exchanged.

Investigators are still working to find out more on what led up to the shooting.

Anyone who has information on a crime or recognizes a suspect described by the program is asked to call 480-948-6377, go to the program's website online or download the Silent Witness app to provide a tip. The identity of anyone who submits a tip is kept anonymous.

Calls to Silent Witness are answered 24/7 by a live person and submitted tips are accepted at all times. Submitted tips are then sent to the detective(s) in charge of the specific case.

Individuals who submit tips that lead to an arrest or indictment in the case can get a reward of up to $1,000.
