SAN ANTONIO — The Alamo Heights Police Department is warning residents of a spike in vehicle burglaries occurring in the neighborhood.
Police say the trend is not just local but is occurring in the greater San Antonio area and throughout Bexar County.
According to authorities, unlocked cars have been a major factor in these vehicle burglaries and say that the criminals only seem to break a window if there is a high-value object left in plain view.
"Vehicle burglaries are one of the highest form of larceny but they are the easiest to prevent," Alamo Police Chief Rick Pruitt said in a release.
Police recommend residents lock their vehicles and remove any valuables from the car - especially firearms. They also ask residents to check their surveillance camera and if there is anything suspicious to contact the police at 210-822-2230 or email cferruzzi@alamoheightstx.gov. If you send a video recording, you are asked to include the date and time of the recording.
"Let's work together to address this problem and prevent Alamo Heights from being labeled 'easy money.' These criminals work in teams and have their own network to share information. As a community and police effort we should be doing the same," Pruitt added in the release.
Police say residents should call 911 instead of confronting these individuals.
