'The sound was horrible' | Alleged drunk driver crashes into great grandmother's home

Janie Lopez said just minutes before the crash, she was sitting in the spot where the truck landed. The 18-year-old driver will be charged with DWI, SAPD said.

SAN ANTONIO — A rude awakening for a west side homeowner. San Antonio Police said a truck crashed into a house off Colima and south Hamilton. The great-grandmother Janie Lopez said just minutes before she was sitting in the spot where the truck landed.

"I can't even believe it," she said. "I still can't even believe it. No, I can't even accept it yet."

She said the home has been her in family since the 1920's. She said the crash happened after 1 a.m. Sunday.

"I am having nightmares at night," she said. "I can hear all the glass."

Lopez said she typically sleeps in the recliner right up front with her dog Duke. Minutes before the crash she had moved to her bed.

"I started screaming," she said. "I was afraid he was going to do something."

Her long-time neighbor Grace Leos called 911. She then started recording the aftermath.

"Had it happened earlier, she could have been under the truck. My heart was beating so fast,"" Leos said.

According to the police report, SAPD says the 18-year-old driver first hit a truck across the street and then crashed into Lopez's home. The great-grandmother said the driver tried to take off.

"He was going forward," she said. "More inside to my house. You can see the breaking of the windows. He said don't call the police."

For now, Lopez's home is patched up with plywood and a blue tarp.

"It is a wake-up call," Leos said. "What do we do to change the way these people drive around here?"

SAPD said the 18-year-old driver was arrested and was taken to the hospital. He will face a DWI charge.
