SAN ANTONIO — A morning raid by Bexar County authorities on April 10 uncovered drugs, weapons and some stolen vehicles, officials say. Now at least one of several people detained at the property is facing charges after he allegedly hid in an SUV to avoid arrest.
The Bexar County Sheriff's Office conducted the raid just after 6 a.m. at a home in the 9200 block of Port Victoria Street, near Interstate 35 on the far southwest side of San Antonio. Sheriff Javier Salazar said the deputies were looking for both drugs and weapons and ended up finding them both at the home, in addition to fully automatic weapons.
"We were looking for guns this morning and that's exactly what we found," said Sheriff Salazar. "We did find some weapons that were equipped with switches that would make them fully automatic weapons. A lot of those items are believed to be stolen."
A few of the suspects inside the home took off running into the wooded area, but deputies were able to apprehend them nearby. Some of the recovered items are believed to have been stolen from a local law enforcement vehicle.
One of those suspects was 23-year-old Steve Chavarria. Arrest records say that, upon deputies' arrival, Chavarria grabbed two fully automatic pistols before hiding in an SUV near the home. According to authorities, both of those guns were determined to be stolen.
Chavarria, who was previously wanted for violating parole, now faces a charges of unlawful possession of metal or body armor by a convicted felon; felon in possession of a firearm; and evading arrest.
Salazar said on April 10 that a few suspects had been detained, some of whom had violent felony warrants.
"At least two, possibly three people will be going to jail this morning. And at least one of them has a felony warrant out for aggravated assault," Salazar said. "Any time you see drugs going north and money or weapons heading south there is absolutely bound to be some kind of cartel connection."
