SAN ANTONIO — A church on San Antonio’s northwest side is calling on the community’s help after they say thieves stole a trailer filled with hundreds of chairs meant for fundraising efforts during Fiesta.
“We’re very broken hearted and it’s very much a shock,” said David Cortez, who attends the Church of God Seventh Day. “San Antonio we need you, we need your help right now, we’re in a bad spot right.”
According to SAPD, the incident took place between 2 a.m. and 4 a.m. at the church parking lot in the 4100 block of Willard drive. The white trailer contained about 600 blue parade chairs. Each chair has the name and address of the church on the back. No security cameras are installed at the church, which Cortez believes should be considered in the future. But now, he's just focused on finding the trailer.
“The gate lock was defeated, the trailer lock was defeated,” Cortez said. “Flambeau, Battle of Flowers. Right now, our potential fundraiser for this coming Fiesta is in jeopardy and we don’t know what’s going to happen.”
The trailer and parade chairs combined amount to nearly $10,000, marking a big blow to the small church community, which relies on the annual Fiesta events for collecting funds.
“It’s just not chairs in trailer, it’s the work that we are very passionate about that we love doing. We’re a church of about 50-60 members so. We love this community. We love San Antonio,” Cortez said.
While police look for leads, Cortez is hoping the thieves return the trailer soon. He said there are no plans to press charges.
