'You’re supposed to be at home, and nothing bad will happen,’ | Dog alerts resident of intruder who attempted to steal homeowner's truck

39-year-old Alfredo Rodriguez is facing burglary of habitation, and possession of controlled substance

SAN ANTONIO — Atascosa County Sheriff David Soward says the homeowner had every right to protect his property.

Law enforcement received a call west of Jourdanton – just after 1 a.m. Tuesday morning, where an intruder allegedly broke into a home.

“The male resident looked into the living room and saw somebody in there, and he grabbed a gun,” Soward said.

That’s when the intruder allegedly tried to make a run for it – but not before the sheriff says he got in the resident’s pickup truck - and attempted to drive off.

Soon after the escape attempt, bullets rang out.

“He did fire shots in the direction of the truck trying to leave his property,” Soward said.

Alfredo Rodriguez, 39, exited the truck with his hands up – surrendering. He was taken into custody by Atascosa County deputies.

“You do that, you’re taking a very good chance at getting yourself shot,” he said. “Especially in a rural county like Atascosa County. It was a good ending to what could have been a very bad situation.”
