Man accused of domestic violence attack, killing 11-month-old daughter appears in court ahead of trial

Stephen Clare faces the death penalty for his alleged crimes.

SAN ANTONIO — A man accused of a domestic violence attack last April appeared in court Thursday ahead of his trial.

Stephen Clare faces the death penalty for allegedly killing his young daughter. Clare is charged in a multiple-count indictment which includes capital murder of a child under the age of 10, attempted capital murder of a child, and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.

In April of 2023, police said Clare went to his ex-wife's home, shot her multiple times and then stabbed his two daughters. One of the girls, Willow Clare who was 11-months-old at the time, died from her injuries.

In the pre-trial hearing Thursday, lawyers met with the judge to discuss issues ahead of his full trial later this year. The trial was set for October 11, but a number of issues have delayed that. The lawyers mentioned the alleged murder weapon has yet to be analyzed at a crime lab due to a backlog at the lab. Lawyers also filed a motion to obtain records on the case from Child Protective Services.

The next pre-trial hearing was set for October 28, but there is no date yet for the start of the trial.

Clare remains in jail after a judge denied him the possibility of being released on bail in May.
