SAN ANTONIO — A 50-year-old former middle school teacher for SAISD has been indicted for allegedly exchanging messages and photos "that were sexual in nature" with a young student last summer, according to authorities.
Lloyd Pegues was a teacher at Rhodes Middle School when an investigation was initiated by SAPD in June 2022. The investigation stemmed from allegations the parents of the victim made after allegedly seeing several messages from Pegues on the victim's phone.
Over the next few months, investigators said they had gathered enough evidence to make an arrest.
On Wednesday, Pegues was indicted by a Bexar County grand jury on two counts of online solicitation of a minor under the age of 14, a second-degree felony crime. He faces up to 20 years in prison if convicted.
The indictment also alleges that Pegues was employed at a public secondary school and knew the victim was enrolled in a public secondary school at the time, which could increase prison time by up to 99 years if the allegation is found to be true by the judge.
"However, it is important to note that an indictment is not, in and of itself, evidence of guilt, and this defendant, like all defendants, is entitled to a presumption of innocence," said Bexar County Criminal District Attorney Paul Elizondo Tower.
"We entrust teachers with the education of our children. This allegation, if proven true, is a betrayal of that trust,” said Bexar County Criminal District Attorney Joe Gonzales in a release. “The safety of our children has always been a priority for our office and we will vigorously prosecute this case.”
