GUADALUPE COUNTY, Texas — Guadalupe County Sheriff Deputies said the amount of drugs they're seizing in their county is going up. Recently, Guadalupe County Narcotics Taskforce K9 Deputy Wesley Doss and his partner Bruno found over 10 kilograms of methamphetamine on a highway with a street value of more than $47,000.
Bruno is a 10-and-half-year-old German Shepherd and is trained to sniff for narcotics.
"Their nose is a lot stronger than ours," Doss said. "I believe it is somewhere in the range of 50,000 times stronger than a human nose."
Deputy Doss said their work is primarily on the highway, Like I-10 and 130.
"I-10 is a pipeline," he said. "We have seen an increase in drugs come up and down I-10. It has been an increase in fentanyl, methamphetamine, cocaine, heroin."
On June 13, the two discovered methamphetamine during a traffic stop at 613 mile marker of IH-10 West. Deputies said a 41-year-old man who just got out of federal prison was carrying all the meth. Doss said the man made a traffic violation and he pulled him over. He said the man from Victoria started acting nervous.
"When we were asking questions, he mentioned no, and then shook his head yes," Doss said.
The DEA and San Antonio Police Department helped in the case. The man identified as Daniel Romanowski was taking into federal custody.
"It was good day," Doss said. "All the training that my K9 and I do every day paid off that day. I would say there are times that we miss it. I am sure we miss a lot more than we can get. But, this day worked out for us."
The Guadalupe County Sheriff provided KENS 5 numbers on the number of drugs confiscated last year from K9 and the Narcotics Division.
As for the top three drugs seized from the Narcotics Division:
- Methamphetamine: 86,150.04 grams
- Cocaine / Crack: 21,772.48 grams
- Marijuana: 25,886 grams
