Instructor at jiu jitsu gym in San Antonio arrested on charge of sexual assault of child

The man courted a student and eventually sexually assaulted her several times, BCSO says.

SAN ANTONIO — A San Antonio who works as a jiu jitsu instructor has been arrested and is facing a charge of sexual assault of a child, according to the Bexar County Sheriff's Office.

Joseph Rene Caballero, 40, operates The Exception Squad, a jiu jitsu studio in the 7600 block of Culebra Road on San Antonio's far west side.

Bexar County Sheriff Javier Salazar said Caballero was arrested over the weekend after a former student at the martial arts school made an outcry to family members that she had been sexually assaulted.

Salazar said Caballero engaged in "grooming-type behavior" with the student in October through December 2023. The student was in a relationship with another person their age, but when that relationship ended, the student started getting anonymous notes from Caballero.

Caballero courted the student and eventually sexually assaulted her several times over the course of several weeks, Salazar said.

Bexar County Sheriff's Office child safe investigators took the student's report at a home in west Bexar County, after which Caballero was arrested.

Caballero was released on a $75,000 bond. He is prohibited from any contact with the alleged victim in this case or with any children other than his own.

The sheriff's office is publicizing the arrest due to a concert that there could be other victims in this case, Salazar said.
