SAN ANTONIO — A man accused of causing a fiery crash leaving a woman dead has been arrested.
According to San Antonio police, 30-year-old Dominic Rodriguez crashed into another car and then ran away from the scene.
Our cameras caught the massive flames and smoke as the chaos unfolded on a San Antonio freeway earlier this month.
The fiery crash happened in the early morning hours of March 1, on the flyover ramp connecting Highwayy 281 to Loop 410.
According to an arrest warrant, Rodriguez rear-ended a Hyundai SUV, causing the it to slam into concrete wall and then roll over on its side.
The driver of the Hyundai was identified by San Antonio police as 76-year-old Eden Nuval. She was rushed to the hospital where she later died.
Investigators said Rodriguez was able to get out of his SUV and then ran away, seconds before his Ford Bronco burst into flames.
According to the arrest warrant, investigators later discovered a 911 call made from Rodriguez’s cell phone as it was still synced to his SUV.
The 911 dispatcher heard Rodriguez get out of the SUV, saying he needed help, according to police documents.
A short time later, the dispatcher heard the door to the SUV slam shut, and Rodriguez allegedly stopped responding to the dispatcher.
Investigators were able to track the cell phone number and the voice on that 911 call to Rodriguez, according to police.
Nuval was from California and visiting San Antonio on vacation.
Her family told KENS 5 that she was on the way to the airport at the time of the crash to go back home, but she never made it.
Now, Rodriguez, the man accused of causing the crash that took her life is now behind bars.
Rodriguez has been charged with Collision Involving Death. Detectives wrote in the arrest warrant, “The driver of the Ford fled the scene of the crash, resulting in the death of the victim.”
Nuval’s sister was also in the SUV at the time of the crash. Her family said she’s going to be okay.
