SAN ANTONIO — The Medina County Sheriff's Office arrested a man on aggravated robbery charges at the San Antonio airport after he was brought back from Colorado, where he was jailed for another crime. Authorities say Carlos David Cardona-Reyes admitted to being in the country illegally.
On April 7, 2022, deputies responded to reports of a Ford F-250 that was picking up individuals off the side of the road near Highway 90 and County Road 432, according to officials. Callers reported that the individuals "came running out of the brush and appeared to be undocumented."
While deputies were on their way to the scene, Medina County authorities received calls saying the individuals in the back of the truck were reportedly throwing items and shooting at the caller's vehicle. When deputies arrived, they found the truck crashed and abandoned along Highway 90 between Hondo and Castroville.
Later that morning, Medina County officials said, deputies also received reports from an elderly woman saying a man entered her home while she was sleeping, allegedly demanding at gunpoint that she give him the keys to her truck. Cardona-Reyes allegedly stole the vehicle, which was subsequently entered into the National Crime Information Center as stolen.
Authorities say the car was found three days later and returned to its owner while other items in the car were analyzed by DPS detectives. On Oct. 12, DPS notified Medina County about DNA evidence found on the items; a few months later, it was determined to belong to Cardona-Reyes, who deputies discovered was in custody in Colorado on aggravated assault charges stemming from a separate crime.
Medina County authorities traveled to Colorado to interview Cardona-Reyes about the events that took place in April 2022, at which point officials said he admitted to being in the U.S. illegally as well as stealing the truck. Authorities subsequently secured a warrant to arrest him on aggravated robbery charges.
Cardona-Reyes was extradited back to Texas and taken into custody by Median County authorities Monday in San Antonio.
