Man faces murder charges after shooting and killing common law wife in domestic violence incident

The suspect, identified as 34-year-old Roger Jordan Conaway, told deputies he shot the woman in self-defense.

SAN ANTONIO — A woman was fatally shot in her apartment on the east side of town and the man involved is claiming self-defense, officials say.

Bexar County sheriff's deputies responded to an apartment complex in the 6000 block of Woodlake Parkway early Tuesday morning for reports of a shooting. Officials say the man accused of shooting the woman at Woodlake Villas walked into a store near the apartment, placed a gun on the counter and then called police.

BCSO said the suspect, 34-year-old Roger Jordan Conaway told authorities he shot his 32-year-old common law wife in self-defense.

A worker who was inside the the gas station at the time told KENS 5 she was scared when he came in.

"My coworkers told me to just not look at him," she said. "He kept going in and out of the store calling someone."

BCSO deputies went to the apartment and found the woman face-down, with several gunshot wounds to her back when they arrived. A two-year-old baby was also found inside the apartment, BCSO says. The baby was not harmed.

The woman was rushed to a local hospital in critical condition, where she died from her injuries.

Officials said Conaway was arrested at the nearby gas station and faces a first degree felony murder charge. The baby has been placed with family members at this time.

Officials say they believe this was a domestic violence incident.
