SAN ANTONIO — Bexar County officials say a 36-year-old man was found dead at the scene of car wreck shortly after authorities received calls about someone in a truck repeatedly dumping trash at a southeast-side business.
It's believed George Gomez was an employee at the business, Sheriff Javier Salazar said, and that he and others may have pursued the person dumping trash before he wrecked. SAPD says the victim died of injuries sustained during the crash. The victim hasn't yet been identified.
Witnesses told investigators there may have been gunfire between two vehicles in the area around the same time.
The person accused of illegally dumping trash was driving an orange Dodge truck which was last seen heading east on U.S. 87, Salazar said. Thursday, Sheriff Salazar said the orange truck had been seized overnight.
He also said the person in the Dodge truck may have "brandished a firearm" while dumping trash.
“I can see where somebody would take extreme offense to somebody dumping illegally on their business," he said. "But following them, especially when you know that person is armed, certainly does escalate things. Rather than people confronting others and placing themselves in harm’s way... we would just as soon you be a good witness."
The first calls to BCSO came in around 4 p.m. from the area of Highway 181 South and Loop 1604, near Calaveras Lake. Deputies found the crashed vehicle about 15 minutes later.
