Elderly woman found dead at San Antonio north-side apartment

Initially, police said the 73-year-old woman was assaulted and her son was detained by officers shortly afterward.

SAN ANTONIO — An elderly woman was found deceased at her north-side apartment Sunday afternoon, according to San Antonio police. Initially, police said she was assaulted. Police said Monday that that was not the case.

Officers were called to an apartment complex in the 3500 block of West Avenue at about 4:20 p.m. Sunday for what was described as a family disturbance.

When police arrived at the home, they found 73-year-old Irene Picas unconscious and being given CPR. EMS arrived at the apartment and pronounced the elderly woman deceased. Shortly after, police initially told KENS 5 the woman had trauma to her face and head. And they believed she was assaulted. At that time her son was detained by officers.

Upon further investigation, police now say no assault occurred. The son who was detained was never arrested. He gave a statement and was released.

Officer Nicholas Soliz told KENS 5 he has been working with the lead detective, who says the woman's death may be due to natural causes, and the trauma to her head may be due to a fall.

KENS 5 spoke to one of the woman's daughters who said that her sister had discovered their mother dead on the floor of the apartment.

The medical examiner's office is still looking into the cause and manner of Picas' death.

This is still an active investigation.
