SAPD: Suspect in deadly southwest-side shooting turns gun on himself as police arrive

The two men were longtime friends, police say.

SAN ANTONIO — A man suspected of shooting and killing another man on the southwest side turned the gun on himself Friday morning, authorities said.

San Antonio police responded to a call for a shooting at Division Avenue and Nogalitos Street near Carlisle Avenue around 6 a.m. Friday.

Police said they received calls about a possible argument on the 3700 block of Nogalitos Street and later for a man found dead on the road.

Upon arrival, officers found a man in his 30s with a gunshot wound to the head. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

After investigating, police said two friends had been drinking and got into an argument. One of the men shot the other in the head, they said.

The suspect then called his son about what he had done, police said. The suspect reportedly drove around the area for a while before stopping at the intersection of Violeta Place and S. Richter Street near W. Cesar E. Chavez Boulevard.

The son informed police his father had a gun and that he feared for his father's safety, police said.

An officer arrived at that location, and while exiting his patrol car, he saw the suspect fatally shoot himself while sitting inside a red sedan. Life-saving attempts were made to revive the man, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.

No other information was provided.
