Zavala Co. authorities arrest man accused of digging up ashes from local cemetery

It's unclear what he was planning to do with the ashes or why he stole them.

SAN ANTONIO — In what it acknowledged was a "very strange" incident, the Zavala County Sheriff's Office investigated the theft of human ashes from a cemetery this week, sharing photos on Facebook of a large hole dug by other gravesites.

The agency later said it had taken a man into custody, thanks to a tip. He hasn't been identified, but he faces charges of abuse of a corpse after he "admitted to digging up the ashes and removing them."

Few other details were shared about the unusual theft, which happened at Benito Juarez Cemetery in Crystal City, Texas.
