Neighbors raise concerns after deadly shooting of 17-year-old in southeast San Antonio

While the shooting doesn't surprise the neighborhood association president, the age of the victim does.

SAN ANTONIO — San Antonio police are still searching for a suspect involved in a deadly shooting on the southeast side Friday night.

Geoffrey Shafer, 17, was found dead with gunshot wounds at East Dullnig Court. Police currently believe that Shafer and someone else were meeting when a fight unfolded, resulting in deadly gunfire.

Initial reports from SAPD indicated that drugs were involved, but police can't confirm that information as of yet in their ongoing investigation.

For those that live in the area, a shooting isn't surprising.

"I'm appalled that this happened in any place in town, but I am not shocked," said resident Brady Alexander. "These kind of things can happen anywhere in town. There's a lot of Ring cameras, for instance, on the street [Dullnig]. So that shows there is some concern, and from my experience living in District 3 for over 30 years,  there has been an increase in crime, especially in the last few years."

George Hinohosa Jr. is president of the Highland Hills Neighborhood Association, which covers the East Dullnig Court. While the shooting doesn't surprise him, Shafer's age does.

"Our neighbors report gunfire on a nightly basis," Hinojosa said. "Besides the massive amount of homeless in our area the last couple of years, we feel our neighborhood is a safe one."

A new police substation is planned for the south side, a project Hinojosa and Alexander believe would help the area.

"We would like to see more of a police presence," Hinojosa said. "Our SAFFE (San Antonio Fear Free Environment) officer does work well with our neighbors and helps many situations, but he is only one officer."

Shafer's family is holding a candlelight vigil and balloon release at 7 p.m. Sunday. Those planning to attend are asked to bring their own balloon and candle, and to wear black, white or blue. It will be held at the Blue Skatepark (8601 Timber Path).
