SAN ANTONIO — An investigation is underway after a New Braunfels police officer fired his service weapon at a man armed with a shotgun in a residential neighborhood Sunday night.

Police were called to the 1200 block of Roaring Falls for a disturbance in progress around 8 p.m.

According to a release by the city, officers found a 63-year-old man who refused to exit the residence. As police tried to make contact with the man, one officer saw the suspect aiming a shotgun at police. One of the officers then fired his weapon through the window of the home towards the man.

Shortly after the gunshots were fired, the man exited the home with a knife in his hands. Police were able to subdue the man and he was taken into custody, according to the release.

The man was taken to a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries and remains in stable condition. It is unclear if the suspect's injuries were self-inflicted or from the result of the officer firing his weapon.

Formal charges against the man are pending his release from the hospital, authorities say.

The incident remains under investigation as an officer involved shooting.

A per standard operating procedure, the officer who fired his weapon has been placed on administrative duty pending the outcome of an investigation by the Texas Rangers. The officer has been identified as a Patrol Sergeant who has been with the New Braunfels Police Department for 17 years.
