'It's traumatic' | Homeowner reacts after suspected drunk driver crashes into her southwest side home

Surveillance cameras captured the moment a driver ran into the home. Fortunately, no one was hurt.

SAN ANTONIO — One person is behind bars after crashing a car into a house on the city's southwest side Friday night.

San Antonio police were called to a single car crash on the 2000 block of Springvale Drive around 11:30 p.m.

Police initially believed the driver had fled the scene on foot. A passenger was found inside the car with unknown injuries. No one inside the house was hurt.

Investigators later determined the passenger was actually the driver and sole occupant in the car.

Police said the driver was evaluated at the scene and was arrested for driving while intoxicated.

Juanita Afzal is the homeowner. She said this is the fourth time someone suspected of drinking and driving has crashed into her home.

“It’s traumatic, like you can’t sleep at night sometimes," Afzal said. "Especially if you hear someone screeching their brakes in the front yard,  it’s like you’re up all night."

Her neighbor's surveillance camera captured the moment the suspect sped down the street and crashed into the home. Afzal said he was a young man and his parents showed up at the scene, apologetic.

“I heard the brakes screeching and stuff, he did try to stop but he just wasn’t able to," Afzal said.

Afzal said the first time someone drove into her home was 30 years ago. Since then, she has installed an iron fence around her front yard and took her complaints to the city. She said the city improved street lighting and placed two speed bumps on the road.

She said it has helped but there is room for improvement.

“The speed bumps are too far back so they’re still able to gain enough speed to get through the house," Afzal said.

She said she is now going to ask for a third speed bump in hopes this will prevent another crash.

“Everybody was like, 'You should’ve gone the first time' but it’s home you know, it’s home," Afzal said. “I’m just grateful that nobody was killed.”
