Police arrest hit-and-run suspect they say injured two homeless people downtown

Surveillance video from Christian Assistance Ministry shows a black sedan peeling out from the area. One woman was seriously hurt.

SAN ANTONIO — Authorities say they've arrested a suspect in a hit and run on Thursday that left two members of the homeless community injured.

Law enforcement told KENS 5 that 34-year-old Jamie Garza ran over a homeless man and woman who were on the sidewalk of Nolan St. under the bridge of IH 37 S. They believe Garza continued driving, crashed into a fence and then ran off.

Dawn White-Fosdick is the President and CEO of Christian Assistance Ministry. She says, the woman hit is one of the nonprofit's clients.

"Hearing the screeching tires and knowing that two people that potentially we knew were run over, was very alarming," White-Fosdick said.

The non-profit is directly across the street from where it all happened.

"Once we kind of understood that an accident took place really at the front of our building of CAM, we really became concerned that it was somebody we knew," she said.

White-Fosdick says the woman hit was no stranger.

"One of my team members was able to go to the hospital and confirm it was one of our clients."

White-Fosdick says this is a tragedy that shouldn't have happened.

"To realize they were doing something innocent like sitting on a sidewalk thinking that you're safe, and to be run over and the person flee the scene is very alarming," she said. "It's a crime. I want people to know that her life matters and that she is loved by lots of people."

Both victims suffered injuries. White-Fosdick confirmed the female victim will have to stay in the hospital for at least two months. The driver, Jamie Garza was arrested for Intoxication Assault and Collision Involving Serious Bodily Injury.
