'He just turned 14': Mother searches for answers after police say her son was shot and killed on northwest side

Police said a neighbor heard multiple shots and went outside to check and saw the teen on the ground.

SAN ANTONIO — A teenager was shot and killed on the northwest side early Wednesday morning, authorities said.

San Antonio police responded to a call around 3:45 a.m. and found a 14-year-old boy, identified as Augie Rangel, with multiple gunshot wounds lying in the middle of Santa Anna Street.

Police said a neighbor heard multiple shots and went outside to check and saw the teen on the ground.

Paramedics attempted life-saving measures on the teen but pronounced him dead at the scene. Authorities said the teen was shot at least three times in the back.

A neighbor said she saw people she believed may have been involved in the shooting looking for bullet casings.

“There was a lot of young men looking for something in the ground, what were they looking for?”

In this area, the neighbor says shootings are common, but she was still shocked to learn of the teen’s death.

The teen's mother, Erica Muma spent the afternoon going door to door, trying to find answers.

“He just turned 14, he was still a baby," Muma said.

She said her son had snuck out Tuesday night. The last time she saw him, she was telling him goodnight.

“He was in his room playing video games and I told him I’m going to go to bed, I went and told him goodnight and then I woke up to this," Muma said.

She said her son was not perfect but she tried her best to discipline him and keep him on the right track.

“He was out where he shouldn’t have been," Muma said. "Wrong place, wrong time and with the wrong people and unfortunately this was the result of that."

She wants him to remembered as a goofy boy who loved his family.

“He was just always smiling and always making everybody laugh," Muma said. "That’s how everyone knew him and that’s how I hope they remember him.”

She said she was able to learn some information from neighbors but is hoping police have enough to make an arrest.

“He deserves justice," Muma said. "He was too young, way too young, he had a whole life ahead of him and now I have to go on living without one of my children and that’s going to be hard for me.”
