'Put yourself in my shoes' | San Antonio man shot in the head five years ago; family still searching for answers

In September 2019, Anthony Clark was shot outside the former Club Groove on East Commerce Street. His killer is still at large.

SAN ANTONIO — It's been five years since Anthony Donnell Clark was murdered outside an east-side nightclub, and police are still looking for the suspect.

While many San Antonio families were spending their rainy Labor Day indoors, Barbara Boyd was at a local cemetery visiting her son.

“He was the life of the party," said Boyd. "When he was always happy, he brought joy to everyone around him.”

Clark, affectionately nicknamed ‘Redd,’ was a husband and truck driver who was about to buy his first house. Boyd says her son loved his nieces and nephews and was a man of faith.

“For a person to change his life who was doing so good to be taken away like that … it’s heartbreaking," Boyd said.

On Sept. 1, 2019, Boyd says her son was celebrating a friend’s birthday at the former Club Groove, which was located at 3818 E. Commerce Street. Investigators believe Clark, 36, stepped outside for a smoke break with an acquaintance.

Clark was then shot in the head from a distance by what police describe as a high-powered rifle. That same shot hit his acquaintance in the buttocks.

Clark was pronounced dead at the scene.

“It seemed like yesterday," said Boyd. "I was getting ready for church when I got the phone call, and I just remember throwing the phone. A lot of people say, ‘It will get better.’ It doesn’t get better.”

She’s now left with memories and questions.

“The thing that hurts me the most is that it’s like nobody is doing anything," said Boyd. "It’s like the case is standing still. Put yourself in my shoes. If it was your child, your brother, your son, would you like for that person to be caught? The person who did this is still on the loose. So, we still have a murderer out here. I wouldn't want this to happen to anyone else. We need to take this person off the street."

The suspect is still unknown, and San Antonio Crime Stoppers is asking for the public's help with any information. They are offering a reward up to $5,000 for information leading to an arrest.

After string of incidents at Club Groove, Boyd's family successfully campaigned to have the nightclub shut down.
