SAN ANTONIO — More than three years after a drive-by shooting claimed the lives of a 17-year-old and pregnant 19-year-old, police have not many any arrests.
The families of Xavier Esquivel and Vianeth Ramos are demanding some answers.
The couple was killed on August 30, 2020 while sitting inside a car parked on the corner of South Olive Street and Aransas Avenue.
San Antonio Police said around 9:30 that night, a white SUV drove up next to the car and fired off at least 20 rounds. Esquivel died at the scene. Ramos died at the hospital. Two other teenagers were in the vehicle but survived their injuries.
“It hurts every day,” Jeanette Mendiola, Xavier’s mother, said.
Mendiola said she believes the shooting was targeted. She said police have not given her any updates.
All she knows is that her son was giving his friends a ride that night.
“I want justice for my son and for Vianeth and the baby,” Mendiola said. “He didn’t deserve to die the way he did.”
Cynthia Rivera is Vianeth’s mother. She too is left wondering what led up to the shooting.
“I don’t know what happened,” Rivera said. “To this day, I don’t know what happened.”
Rivera said while she is hurting, she believes her daughter is in heaven with her baby and boyfriend.
“It hurts me a lot but also she’s at peace, I believe and now they are together, like they always wanted to be,” Rivera said.
