San Antonio man indicted in September 2023 dog attack

Marcus Davila faces multiple charges in connection with the west-side attack.

SAN ANTONIO — A 40-year-old San Antonio man has been formally charged with aggravated assault after allegedly letting his Cane Corso mastiff loose on another man he was arguing with last fall, resulting in major injuries to the victim.

Marcus Davila was arrested Sept. 21 on the west side, where police said he intentionally allowed his dog to attack Raymond Zamora, 53. Zamora was bitten in the neck and had to undergo emergency surgery, according to a press release from the district attorney's office.

Davila was released on bond the next day, court records show.

On Tuesday a Bexar County grand jury returned an indictment against Davila, further setting the stage for a trial. He is charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, a second-degree felony, and attack by dog resulting in serious bodily injury, a third-degree felony.

"Mr. Davila will get his day in court and our office will have to prove these charges beyond a reasonable doubt," Bexar County DA Joe Gonzales is quoted as saying in the release.

According to Gonzales' office, Davila faces up to 30 years in prison if convicted. But that prison time could be extended, officials say, due to prior convictions. A judge ordered the dog to be euthanized in the aftermath of the September incident.
