Man behind bars after setting woman on fire while she was sitting in her car, SAPD says

A witness told police they saw a man walk up to the vehicle from under a nearby bridge shortly before it caught on fire.

SAN ANTONIO — A man is now behind bars after police say he lit a woman on fire while she was sitting in her vehicle on the east side.

On June 21, the San Antonio Police Department responded to the 200 block of Rice Road after receiving reports of a vehicle on fire. Upon arrival, officials said they could automatically tell the car was set on fire by a device and not accidental.

A witness told police they saw a man walk up to the vehicle from under a nearby bridge shortly before it caught on fire. The witness then told authorities they heard something shatter and then immediately saw the vehicle be engulfed by flames.

Officials were reportedly able to quickly put out the fire and then found the victim, identified as April Dembo, walking away from the vehicle with severe burns on her arms and legs.

Police said Dembo corroborated the witnesses statements.

The suspect has been identified as 35-year-old Kevin Christopher Hughes and he is facing a first degree felony charge of arson causing bodily injury/death.
