Newly released bodycam video shows the moment SAPD officers fired at and killed suspect in allegedly stolen car

The footage shows officers firing their weapons at the vehicle they say was stolen, hitting 21-year-old Angel Cuevas. He later died at the hospital.

SAN ANTONIO — The San Antonio Police Department released body camera video showing officers shooting at a suspect as he was making a getaway in a car authorities say was stolen last month. The 21-year-old driving the car was later declared dead.

On the evening of May 19, SAPD officers were dispatched to the 17800 block of La Cantera Terrace, on the city’s far northwest side, for an unrelated narcotics call. Upon arriving, officers noticed an unoccupied vehicle nearby that had been reported stolen in March, according to authorities.

Police say when the officers went to investigate the initial call, a male suspect later identified as 21-year-old Angel Cuevas was seen trying to get away in the stolen vehicle.

The new video, narrated by SAPD Sgt. Washington Moscoso, shows the two officers running after and calling out to Cuevas as he gets into the vehicle. He is then seen running over a curb and onto the grass, in the direction of police and a woman walking her dog.

The officers can be heard briefly ordering Cuevas to exit the car as he drives forward. They then are heard firing at least four times at the car, which continues driving until it hits a light pole.

Officers are seen walking towards the car, which now has visible bullet holes in the front passenger window. They break the window to find Cuevas, who police say was shot in the head.

"Officers provided lifesaving measures at the scene prior to EMS' arrival," Moscoso said, adding Cuevas was taken to a nearly hospital where he died.

Both officers involved, Travis Maxwell and Daniel Garcia, have eight months of service with SAPD and were placed on administrative duty pending the outcome of the investigation by the district attorney’s office.
