Hearing set for 16-year-old who allegedly shot, killed mother in west San Antonio

Police said a shotgun used in the crime was seized at the scene.

SAN ANTONIO — A family argument turned violent Tuesday afternoon when police say a 16-year-old shot and killed his mother before being taken into custody.

The gunfire rang out shortly after 2 p.m. in west San Antonio in the 1500 block of Delgado Street, near the intersection with Northwest 19th Street. Police Chief William McManus said the murder weapon, a shotgun, was seized by responding officers.

“I can’t imagine what may have prompted that, but at any rate the mother was shot by a juvenile and that’s where we are right now," McManus said, adding the mother was shot in the back of her head.

A distant relative told KENS 5 she heard the teen tell his family, he was sorry and "didn't meant to" before running off to another home down the street. The victim has been identified as Luz Aurora Gonzalez, 37. Officials say she was shot in the back of the head.

"I never thought something like this would happen," Bailee Williams said.

Police found him quickly and took him into custody without incident.

One man who lives across the street said he ran out the moment after he heard the gunshot.

“I don’t see how a son could do that to a mother," Carlos Mendoza said.

McManus said there hadn't been calls for "domestic-related events" to the home in recent weeks.

"There had to be extenuating circumstances that led to it but for an argument to result like that, that wasn't, they could've walked away," said another neighbor.

Police haven't yet said what charges the boy might face. The boy's hearing is expected to take place on Thursday morning.

This is a developing story and further details will be added as they are received. Check back to this article for updates.
