SAN ANTONIO — A man is in custody and facing charges for the alleged aggravated sexual assault of a woman while she was being administered ketamine to treat depression and anxiety, according to an arrest warrant.

Deputies say 60-year-old Edward Jose Ramirez was arrested for targeting the 37-year-old female victim during a ketamine therapy appointment at the Epicc Wellness Ketamine Treatment Clinic, located on the city’s far northwest side.

According to the arrest warrant, the victim stated Ramirez called her in May and asked if she could show up the day before their previously agreed-upon appointment. She claims she was dropped off at the clinic by her brother for what was expected to be a nearly three-hour session.

When Ramirez arrived, the victim said she realized there was not going to be an assistant present in the room like there had been in previous sessions. She said she still decided to proceed "because she felt safe during previous appointments."

She claims she was administered the ketamine and "was not fully unconscious, but she could not speak or move." Sometime after the treatment began, records say, the victim told authorities Ramirez began to take advantage of her by rubbing over her clothing.

She recalled the assault that occurred as she was in and out of consciousness, telling authorities she "began to fell helpless."

"She was also upset because she considered this place to be a safe place due to her suffering from anxiety and depression," the arrest warrant stated.

Finally, the victim told police, the sound of a phone call being received by Ramirez woke her up. After the phone call, she claims he "walked to the victim and lifted her from the chair, pulling her pants up. He then told her this was to stay between them."

According to the arrest document, the woman was then released to her brother and went to a local hospital where a Sexual Assault Nurse Exam (SANE) was conducted and the suspect’s DNA obtained via a search warrant.  Ramirez, when being interviewed by law enforcement, denied the allegations against him.

Deputies say he claimed that he and the victim had been having a consensual sexual relationship, which the woman said was false.

Ramirez was arrested earlier this month and now faces a first-degree felony charge of aggravated sexual assault. He faces up to 99 years in prison if convicted.
