SAPD: Man rammed car into police units in attempt to evade capture; two officers hurt

Jose Valdez, 29, had an outstanding warrant for a family violence charge. He now faces several other charges stemming from Monday's arrest.

SAN ANTONIO — Two San Antonio Police Department officers were injured while trying to arrest a suspect on the east side Monday afternoon.

The incident began at about 3 p.m. off I-90 at General McMullen.

Police say 29-year-old Jose Valdez rammed three of their patrol units and crashed into three other vehicles while trying to get away after police tried to arrest him for an outstanding warrant.

While trying to make the arrest, two officers were injured: one with small cuts on their hand from trying to get the suspect out of his car, and the other with whiplash from the suspect crashing into their patrol vehicle.

Police said they went to Valdez's house in the 500 block of Sandmeir last week to try to arrest him on a felony charge of family violence, but they could not find him.

On Monday, when they went back to arrest him, police say he ran when he saw the SAPD helicopter overhead.

Police followed but didn't chase Valdez. The suspect ended up on Patton Boulevard, where police said Valdez crashed into three vehicles and three patrol cars trying to get away.

SAPD says Valdez now faces three counts of criminal mischief and two counts of assault against a police officer.
