SAPD releases officer involved shooting video, showing officer shoot man walking away with a machete

The officer says he shot the man, because he thought the suspect was going to hurt someone.

SAN ANTONIO — The San Antonio Police department have released video of a deadly officer involved shooting, which happened around 9:30 p.m. on September 16, 2023.

Police were called to Nicha's Mexican Restaurant on Roosevelt Avenue for a robbery, but that quickly escalated into something much more serious.

Officers say they received calls that a man was stealing things from storage, at the restaurant, and had a gun and machete.

Authorities say one caller said several employees were chasing the man.

The caller said the suspect pointed a gun at a waiter, before jumping the fence into an apartment complex.

Police say one of the employees saw the suspect carrying backpacks. The employee recognized his backpack, and tried to take it from the suspect. Officers then say the suspect started swinging the machete at the employee, and he back off.

Witnesses say the suspect had threatened other people with the machete, before police arrive.

The video shows when police arrived, the suspect was running away through the apartment complex. The suspect tripped and fell in front of another officer with the machete in his hand.

The suspect then got up and walked away.  Police told the suspect the stop and drop the machete, but the suspect kept going.  The officer then shot the suspect twice, because he thought the suspect was going to hurt someone.

The suspect was identified as 46 year old Jesus Hernandez, who died at the scene. Police did not find a gun.

The district attorney's office is reviewing the shooting.
