SAN ANTONIO — A school board trustee with Harlandale ISD was arrested just before midnight on Christmas Eve after hitting and scratching her husband during a fight, police records state.
Christine Carrillo, the District 2 representative on Harlandale ISD's board, was verbally arguing with her husband when she grabbed him by the shirt collar "and struck him twice with an open hand," according to an affidavit. Police say they found what appeared to be scratch marks on his neck, chest and forearms, some of which were "actively bleeding."
Record state Carrillo told police she "had been in a bad mood all day" before arguing with her son-in-law, at which point her husband intervened in the confrontation that turned physical. Police also noted a bruise on her forearm, which she said was the result of her husband hitting her in reaction to allegedly being grabbed.
Carrillo, whose was overwhelmingly reelected in 2021, faces a misdemeanor charge of assault causing bodily injury. She was released on Christmas Day after posting bond, and has an arraignment hearing set for Jan. 24.
KENS 5 reached out to the district for a statement on Tuesday. Mariana Vieyra, Public Information Officer sent this response:
"Board member Christine Carrillo has submitted her resignation from the Harlandale ISD School Board as a result of her recent arrest. This is a very unfortunate situation and the district understands the severity of the allegations. The board will be discussing next steps to accept her resignation and consider the process and timeline for filling the vacancy at the next board meeting on January 10, 2024. Harlandale ISD appreciates the community's support as we continue to focus on student success."
As of 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, Carrillo is still listed as a trustee on its website.
