Sonic manager gunned down Sunday night was covering a shift, family says

San Antonio police have identified two persons of interest but have yet to make any arrests.

SAN ANTONIO — As San Antonio police continue looking for his killer, loved ones of a Sonic manager shot dead Sunday night said he wasn't supposed to be working when he was murdered, but came in to cover a shift.

Daniel Schrewsbury was about to turn 34 years old at the end of July. He's described by relatives as a caring, hard-working and loving man.

He was also Peggy Cofield's firstborn.

"I want my son back," Cofield told KENS 5. "That's what I want, is my son back. He shouldn't be laying in a morgue right now, he should be at home."

Schrewsbury worked at the Sonic off Babcock Road just east of Huebner. His family says he was dedicated to the job, often being called in on his time off.

That's what happened Sunday night.

"He went to work every day," Cofield said. "He bled sweat, tears for that job."

Police are still searching for the suspects who shot the 33-year-old employee.

Police officials say that around 9:40 p.m., there was an argument between Schrewsbury and the suspect. That led to the suspect pulling out a gun and shooting Schrewsbury in the chest.

He was able to retreat back into the restaurant where he died.

Police say the shooter took off. On Monday, the agency shared photos of two persons of interest they're looking for in the investigation, saying they've been identified.

But no arrests have been made as of Tuesday night.

San Antonio police are looking for two suspects in connection with the Sunday night shooting.
Police say the suspects are still on the run after the woman allegedly shot and killed the Sonic employee during an argument outside the restaurant.

"Why was that so worth my son's life?" Cofield said. "He was just doing his job."

While the family wants justice, they admit that right now they're having a difficult time processing why their loved one was killed over a fast food order.

"What was the purpose? What did he do to you to take his life?" Cofield wondered out loud.

The Sonic location remained closed two days later, but a small memorial could be seen growing outside the kitchen.
