SAPD: Man stabbed at southwest-side church festival, suspect still on the run

The victim is currently in stable condition after being stabbed in the face and arm by an unknown suspect.

SAN ANTONIO — San Antonio Police said a man is in stable condition after being stabbed in the face and arm Sunday night outside a music festival.

Officers were called to Pearsall Park, located in the 5600 block of Old Pearsall Road, at about 10 p.m. According to details posted to social media, the 'Divine Providence Parish Festival' was happening at the Divine Providence Catholic Church located at 5667 Old Pearsall Road during that time.

Councilwoman Dr. Adriana Rocha Garcia explained that Pearsall Park was used for overflow parking for the festival. For her, what happened Sunday night is personal.

"I've been coming to this since I was a little girl and so it's never happened," Rocha Garcia said. "I always get to hug people from the community and celebrate with them and just experience that community aspect that a church festival brings you. It's really really hard for me."

According to police, a man was stabbed in the face and arm outside the festival at Pearsall Park. The male suspect then fled the scene on foot.

The victim was taken to the hospital in stable condition.

"This should never have happened at a church function," Rocha Garcia said. "And it's incredibly sad. I hope that the gentleman recovers. But I also hope that we catch who did this and it's important to be on the lookout for any anything that you saw last night."

She also believes the incident is a call to action for churches and for the rest of the community.

"Let's work with the community, work with SAPD, work with anyone we can to see if we can get some additional level of security so our residents feel safe and want to still come out and support," she said.

Jordan McMorrough, the Director of Communications for the Archdiocese of San Antonio told KENS 5 in a statement: "We pray for the victim of this violent incident and defer further comment to law enforcement, as this situation is under criminal investigation."

Police haven't released any information about the suspect at this time.

Anyone with any information is asked to contact SAPD.
