SAN ANTONIO — Two months after a fatal hit and run east of downtown, San Antonio police arrest the driver accused of hitting and killing a man and then speeding away.
According to an arrest warrant, on June 9 around 11:30pm, 34-year-old Corey Schultz was speeding through the intersection of E. Commerce and N. Hackberry when he hit 71-year-old Keith Brown.
Schultz allegedly sped away as Brown was left to die in the middle of the road.
Brown died on his 71st birthday.
According to police documents, Brown was walking across E. Commerce when the driver of a Subaru Forester, later identified as Schultz, was speeding down E. Commerce and hit Brown, and then took off.
Later that night, investigators reported they discovered the Subaru abandoned a little over a mile away from the scene of the deadly accident.
When detectives searched the vehicle, they discovered a receipt from a Target store, dated the day before the crash, according to police documents.
The arrest warrant goes on to explain how detectives were able to track down the surveillance video from that Target store, and found the key clue that would eventually crack the case.
Investigators say the video from the Target store shows a Subaru Forester pull into the parking lot, and they were immediately able to identify the vehicle as the one that was involved in the hit and run off E. Commerce.
And, then another break in the case.
That surveillance video captured an image of the man driving that Subaru, investigators identified as Schultz, according to an arrest warrant.
Schultz is now facing a charge of Failing to Stop and Render Aid Resulting in Death.
According to Bexar County online court records, Schultz was arrested and charged with DWI in 2021.
He reportedly pleaded guilty and was granted deferred adjudication last year.
