SAN ANTONIO — One man was killed in an officer-involved shooting on the city's east side Monday evening.
Speaking to reporters, SAPD Assistant Chief Anthony Trevino said that police received several calls that a man was "pointing a gun at people" near a bus stop at the intersection of South Pine and Iowa Street.
One officer was able to respond shortly after police received the reports, Trevino said. Soon after the first officer arrived, a VIA police officer also responded to the scene. Police say the officer honked his horn and told the man to drop his weapon. Police say the suspect then turned and opened fire at the officers. The SAPD officer returned fire, eventually hitting the suspect.
Trevino says that EMS declared the suspect deceased upon arriving at the scene.
Police say the suspect was a male, but has yet to release his identity.
The officer who shot the suspect has been with SAPD for 30 years, Trevino says. Both the SAPD and VIA officers have been placed on administrative leave, which police say is standard procedure in officer-involved shootings.
Trevino expressed his gratitude towards the officer for bringing a quick end to the incident.." We don’t know what would have happened if the situation would have been prolonged," Trevino said to reporters Monday.
