SAN ANTONIO — San Antonio police have arrested a fourth suspect in connection to a murder that unfolded back in March 2023, officials say, following a downtown pursuit on Tuesday night.
In an October Crime Stoppers plea, police investigators identified that suspect as 17-year-old Angel David Salas.
With crowds of downtown visitors packing Market Street near Bowie on Tuesday night to view holiday lights, a flood of officers from several agencies chased Salas down when they say he ran from a stolen car. Pedestrians walking past the spectacle could be seen recording the event on their cell phones.
Three others – 21-year-old Mariah Cabrera, 21-year-old Jonathan Garza and 23-year-old Jayveon Johnson – were already in custody for the murder of 20-year-old David Rezentes.
On March 25, 2023, officers responded to the 3200 block of El Paso Street for a shooting. When they arrived, authorities said, they found a running vehicle with the doors open and no one inside. Police also found a bullet hole on the passenger side of the vehicle and a baggie containing a white powdery substance in the passenger seat. Authorities believed the substance to be cocaine.
According to SAPD, while officers were at the scene, they received a second call for an unresponsive person on the sidewalk. That man, later identified as Rezentes, was found a block away with a gunshot wound to his chest. He was pronounced dead by paramedics.
As the investigation continued, authorities identified the driver of the getaway vehicle as Garza, resulting in police determining the identities of the other suspects.
Investigators say Rezentes and his friend had set up a drug deal though social media to sell narcotics to the suspects. While waiting at a meet-up spot, the suspects approached the duo and attempted to rob them at gunpoint.
Police say surveillance video shows the suspects shooting at Rezentes and the second victim. Both men entered the car and fled but Rezentes had been shot and collapsed a block away.
Where things stand now
Cabrera has accepted a plea deal on a murder charge. Online court records indicated she's scheduled to be sentenced Friday.
Johnson is awaiting trial, but online court records don't indicate that a date has been set.
Garza, whom police say admitted to his role in the murder, is also awaiting trial. Jail records indicate he's been remanded without the possibility of bond while he awaits trial.
Because he was just 16 at the time of the killing, a court official said Salas will likely end up back in the juvenile system. For now, he's being held as an adult in the Bexar County jail, charged with evading and resisting arrest and failure to ID. His bonds total $150,000.
