SWAT responds to armed man who allegedly held girlfriend against her will

SAPD K-9 and SWAT units arrived around 1:45 p.m. and began to negotiate with the barricaded suspect.

SAN ANTONIO — The San Antonio Police Department (SAPD) SWAT unit responded to a northwest-side apartment complex after a woman called saying her boyfriend was holding her against her will, authorities said.

Officers arrived at the complex along the 8600 block of Cinnamon Creek around 1:45 p.m. for what SAPD Sgt. Washington Moscoso called a possible "domestic disturbance involving a gun." According to Moscoso, the caller told authorities she was being held against her will in the apartment and her boyfriend "may have produced a gun" during an altercation.

Officials said the woman was later able to get out of the unit safely.

Once officers attempted to make contact with the suspect in the apartment, Moscoso said he started making comments that were "disheartening" to the officers, which made them cautious and forced them to step back to "re-assess the situation."

The individual, later identified as Karey Cox, was reportedly making threatening remarks.

"Like he wanted to be injured, or worse, by police officers on scene," Moscoso said.

Negotiators started communicating with Cox through their loudspeaker before he emerged a short time later and was taken into custody by police. He had an active warrant for evading arrest, and online court records indicate his criminal history goes back to 2007, with charges for assault, aggravated robbery, terroristic threats and other offenses.
