'We're not backing down' | Grieving family demands answers after woman found dead in Sweeny apartment

The family of Michaela Jeffries, 28, believes foul play is involved.

SWEENY, Texas — A Brazoria County family is mourning the death of their 28-year-old loved one after she was found dead in her apartment three weeks ago.

The Sweeny Police Department is now investigating Michaela Jefferies' death.

Jeffries was laid to rest, but her family is still waiting for answers from the police as they grieve.

"Frustrated, we just don't have the answers," Betty Liles said. She is Jefferies' grandmother.

Jeffries worked at the Kid's Academy Learning Center in West Columbia.

"She didn't find bad in anyone. She was trying to further herself to be better, have a better life for her and her son, she was taken from us way too soon," Liles said.

Three weeks ago, the Sweeny Police Department said they were conducting a joint death investigation with the Brazoria County District Attorney's Office. KHOU 11 News reached out to the Sweeny Police Department this week for additional information but did not hear back.

Barbara Lindley, Jefferies' aunt, is one of many in the family who believes there was foul play involved.

"We're not backing down until Michaela gets justice," Lindley said.

She wants investigators to be transparent with her family.

"What if it was your niece, what if it was your daughter? Do something," Lindley adds.

This tight-knit family said the grief of losing Michaela follows them.

"It's been very hard. She worked with me at the daycare, it was harder for me to go and her not be there," Liles said.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Sweeny police at (979) 548-3111.
