SCHERTZ, Texas — A teen has been arrested after police say he brought a gun to the Allison Steele Learning Center in Schertz.
On Monday around 9 a.m., the Schertz Police Department (SPD) responded to the Allison Steele Learning Center after receiving reports that a student had a gun on campus. A joint investigation with SPD and school administration was initiated to identify the student as soon as possible.
The student was identified as 17-year-old Samuel Rodriguez but even though he was not on campus at the time of the investigation, police said they were able to confirm that he had been on campus with the gun.
The School Resource Officer (SRO) was able to contact Rodriguez at his residence and gathered further evidence which led to an arrest warrant being issued.
Rodriguez was arrested and taken to Guadalupe County Jail where he is facing charges for unlawful carrying a weapon prohibited place and enhanced weapon free zone.
This is the second student in the district to be arrested for bringing a gun on school grounds just this week.
“It is imperative that we are talking to our children about the choices they make as some have lifelong consequences. Again, we are thankful for the working relationship we have with SCUC ISD and our SROs who immediately responded and investigated this incident. The Schertz Police Department wants to ensure that the safety of our children is paramount,” Chief of Police Jim Lowery said.
The Principal at Allison Steele Learning Center, Joey Trevino, released a statement to parents and staff saying that he was shown a picture from social media of Rodriguez holding the weapon in one of the school's bathrooms and immediately contacted the campus' SRO. He also let the parents and staff know Rodriguez has been detained and is no longer allowed on school property.
"We always encourage all students, if you see or hear something, say something. I want to commend the individual who reported this situation to me so it could be handled appropriately," said Trevino. "The safety of our students and staff remains our top priority at all times. It will continue to require that we work together to help keep our students and staff safe."
