SAN ANTONIO — San Antonio Police are looking for a 15-year-old boy who may have left his southwest-side home in possession of a gun Wednesday afternoon, according to officials.

Authorities were called to a disturbance on the 5700 block of Timberrock Drive around 1:15 p.m.

A mother apparently called police and informed them her teenage son had taken her pistol Tuesday night. The mother told police she took the firearm away from her son and hid it.

Police say earlier today the mother realized her firearm was missing while her son was at South San Antonio High School. The father of the teenager advised the mom to pick up their son from school.

The mother proceeded to pick up her son from the high school and when she brought him home he went to his bedroom, where his mother found him with the firearm. The teen then refused to give his mom the gun and told her he "needed it for protection," police say.

Investigators are unsure what kind of protection the teen was referring to.

Authorities say the father then called police after the teen refused to hand over the gun. The teen had fled the home before police arrived.

SAPD says they have not located the teen or the gun.

The mother told police her son made no threats to family members or the school district.

Police say the teen could face criminal charges.

The police were unable to say if the gun was at the school when the teen was there. The school district released the following statement:

At this moment, there is no indication that any South San Antonio ISD student was on or left campus with a weapon.

San Antonio PD is handling this investigation as it took place off district property. We will continue to work closely with law enforcement and have secured all surrounding campuses where the incident took place as well as South San Antonio High School.
