SAPD: Suspect taunts teen about dead mother before shooting and killing him

The teen was taken to a local hospital in critical condition but later died from his injuries.

SAN ANTONIO — A deadly shooting broke out between two teenage boys at a west-side apartment complex Wednesday night, authorities say.

San Antonio Police were called to the 1500 block of San Carlos Street around 10:40 p.m.

Police say an ongoing feud between two teens boiled over after the suspect started taunting the teen about his mother, who recently died. A fight broke out and at some point the suspect pulled out a gun and shot the teen multiple times.

The teen was taken to a local hospital in critical condition but later died from his injuries. The medical examiner has identified him as 16-year-old Joel Castillo.

Police say the suspects' mother gave investigators the name and a description of her son following the incident.

According to SAPD, the suspect is a 14-year-old male who initially fled the location but was taken into custody shortly after.

This is a developing story.
